Ontario has more highways that can be driven at 110 km/h
The provincial government is confident that it is safe.
In September 2019, a pilot increase in the maximum speed from 100 km/h to 110 km/h was introduced on three sections of highways. After two and a half years of experimentation, the government decided it was safe enough, and increased the number of such sections.
The speed limit has now been changed permanently on six sections of highways in southern Ontario, and two sections in northern Ontario have been changed temporarily. The shortest section is 16 km and the longest is 102 km.
In addition to Ontario, six other Canadian provinces have established a 110 km/h speed limit on some highways — they are Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Note that Ontario has had the fewest fatal crashes of any province in the past 18 years, and Alberta, for example, has the second highest number of fatal accidents involving elk.
