Canada announced new anti-Russian sanctions

The Russian Ambassador in Ottawa, Oleg Stepanov, was summoned "on the carpet" at the Canadian Foreign Ministry.

Canada has imposed new sanctions against Russia in connection with the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine. This became known from the statement of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, made at a special press conference, which was held after an emergency meeting of the G7, held in the online format.

So far, there are reported intentions to impose personal sanctions against 58 Russians, including members of the Russian elite and their families. In particular, as stated, the sanctions will affect members of the Security Council and some ministers of the Russian Government. Representatives of the unofficial armed formation "Wagner Group" and a number of major Russian banks will also be subject to restrictions.

Among other things, Canada's Minister of Immigration and Refugees has expressed Ottawa's willingness to prioritize the immigration applications of Ukrainians trying to escape conflict in their country. As a measure of support, a special telephone line (+1 613-996-8885) has been launched, available to all Ukrainian citizens who have urgent questions about immigration. Among other things, actions were taken to return home from Ukraine citizens and permanent residents of Canada, as well as their family members. In particular, safe passage through land borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova has been arranged.

Finally, earlier on Thursday, the Russian ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, was invited to the headquarters of Foreign Affairs Canada at the request of Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly for a talk. As part of the meeting, she condemned Russia's actions, describing them as violating Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.
