More and more candidates immigrate to Canada through education
The vast majority of students enrolled in Canadian universities later obtain permanent residency.
According to a recent Statistics Canada study, the number of international students in the country has grown significantly in recent years, which in turn has led to an increase in the number of work permits issued after training. In the past decade, the number of people in Canada on a student visa has increased from 75,000 to 250,000. Most of them graduate and obtain work permits.
The Work Permit after Training allows foreign graduates to stay in Canada and be employed by any company. They have the right to change employers and live in any region, but the permit is issued for up to three years and the training program must last at least 8 months.
The annual number of work permits issued after studies has increased 6-fold in the last decade, from 10,300 to 64,700. A high proportion of international students in Canada are from India and China.
The province that attracts the most students (56%) is Ontario. The next most popular are British Columbia and Quebec.
The study also notes that work permit holders are successfully employed, as evidenced by their tax returns. Moreover, within 5 years of graduation, about 75% of graduates obtain permanent residency. In 2022, immigration through education is expected to be one of the most reliable pathways to Canada.
