Best time for seasonal employees in Canada
Because of the labor shortage, temporary job seekers have advantages.
Large retailers and shipping companies are always hiring tens of thousands of seasonal workers. But 79% of employers report that it's always difficult to hire people in the last months before the holidays.
During the 2021 holiday season, labor shortages will be particularly acute. However, as experts note, this will allow job seekers to take a freer approach to choosing a job.
Seasonal employees now have more leverage than ever to negotiate higher wages or higher hiring bonuses.
Daniel Zhao, senior economist and lead data analyst at employer review site, advises the following strategy for getting the best seasonal working conditions:
- Research the offers on the market. You should know how much money employers are paying for vacancies and not settle for less.
- Consider the interview. Before you go into a negotiation, think through and practice what you are going to say.
- Take advantage of seasonal work to get a full-time job. Some employers may hire temporary employees then full-time. However, you can also use seasonal work as experience. It will then help you get a permanent job in this field.
