One of Canada's provinces will employ immigrants
The region has developed a system that will help both job seekers and companies with openings at the same time.
The Newfoundland and Labrador provincial government is launching an initiative that will help new immigrants successfully adapt and find work after they move and help employers fill the labour shortage. Newfoundland and Labrador also aims to welcome 5,100 new immigrants annually through its provincial program by 2026.
The offer is available to candidates who have graduated from one of the universities or colleges in the province, their spouses, and people with an open Canadian work permit who would like to live in Newfoundland and Labrador.
"Through this new approach, we are introducing employers who have job openings to qualified immigrants. Our staff is working to make life easier for newcomers who want to settle in Newfoundland and Labrador, meet our changing workforce needs and support population growth," commented Gerry Byrne, provincial immigration minister.
The registration form is completed online. Applicants will be asked to attach a scan or electronic version of their work permit, resume and their Canadian National classifier occupation number. Applications will be accepted from September 29 to October 13, 2021.
Employers who want to hire employees will also, in turn, submit applications. Applicants' resumes and company vacancies will then be matched in order to best allocate people to jobs. In the future, the province plans to regularly open applications for a certain period of time.
In addition, Newfoundland and Labrador has launched several other initiatives to attract immigrants, such as:
- support for immigrants in adaptation, including training, employment, language courses;
- working on an online portal to accept immigration applications;
- introduction of English as a foreign language into the school curriculum.
