Doctors and teachers made the list of highest paid professionals in Ontario
The province has released a list of the most successful and highest-paid workers in 2020.
Ontario has released its 2020 Sunshine List of public servants who earned more than $100,000 CAD in the last year. Of course, the results were heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, adding thousands of health care and school education workers to the list of the highest-paid professionals in the province.
More than 205,000 names made the list last year, a 23% increase over 2019's roughly 167,000 government employees.
Hospitals and boards of public health and school boards accounted for almost 75% of the increase in the number of highly paid employees.
The province says pandemic pay, such as overtime hours and pandemic pay, has led to increased income for some employees, including the possibility of exceeding the $100,000 CAD threshold.
Kenneth Hartwick of Government Power Generation topped the list. In 2020, his income exceeded $1.2 million CAD. Other executives at that company made the top six spots on the list.
Of the top 20 highest paid workers in the province in 2020, only two were women.
Ontario Health's Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Williams earned more than $444,000 CAD and his deputy Dr. Barbara Jaffe earned more than $296,000 CAD.
While the number of workers earning $100,000 CAD or more increased last year, average wages fell to $125,871 CAD in 2020 from $127,396 CAD in 2019.
