Spring break in Ontario has been postponed

This was announced by the provincial education minister on February 11.

Education Minister Steven Lecce has decided to postpone the dates of spring holidays and move them from March to the middle of next month — schoolchildren will now rest from April 12.

Over the past few weeks, Ontario students have been returning to face-to-face classes. In the areas most affected by COVID-19 — Toronto, Peel and York — schools are scheduled to resume on February 16.

Lecce says it's important not to cancel recess. The minister said it would help reduce the rate of transmission of coronavirus infection between Ontarians, including between students and school staff. The province's largest teachers' union has also previously called on the government to keep the holidays in place.

Private schools, however, are free to make their own decisions, but Lecce urges them to follow his recommendations.

Although the spread of the virus has recently slowed, there is still a risk that new, more infectious strains could start ravaging the country and bring another total lockdown to the province.
