Why do Canadian employers turn down candidates?
Sending dozens of job applications to Canadian employers and getting rejected? Companies tell you the top reasons.
American company Harris Poll, which is engaged in labor market research, conducted a survey among employers in Canada at the request of the recruiting agency Express Employment Professionals. It turns out that 59% of companies surveyed have difficulties in hiring.
What is the reason? As it turned out, the matter is not so much in the professional training of applicants, as in the absence of the so-called "flexible skills". These are personal qualities that can be important in any profession.
One-third of employers responded that potential employees lack the nondisability, flexibility and willingness to learn. Companies also note that in a post-pandemic reality, agile skills can play an even more important role than professionalism.
"Companies are very willing to invest tremendously in new employees: in training, development, coaching and mentoring," shared Brent Pollington, owner of Express franchises in Vancouver.
In return, employers expect their investment to pay off. But with a shortage of suitable workers, Pollington says, companies are simply afraid to invest in training them.
Researchers at RBC Economics recently came to similar conclusions. The organization argues that the pandemic has changed the labor market, and it now particularly values the ability to adapt to new conditions, as well as creative skills and other flexible qualities. These are the kinds of requirements that have been and are increasingly appearing in job vacancies for 2020-2021.
There has been an increased demand for critical thinking, flexibility, teamwork skills, the ability to learn, the desire for continuous improvement, and the ability to solve problems.
