Housing in Canada will become more affordable
The Nova Scotia Liberal Party will provide $25 million CAD to help address the province's housing shortage.
That announcement came Tuesday morning from Housing Minister Geoff McLellan. And the $25 million CAD allocation will be just the first step towards the important goal of making housing construction in Nova Scotia more affordable for low-income citizens.
McLellan promised that the money would help build housing for 600-900 families, with the first apartments expected to be built within the next 12-18 months.
The Department of Housing has announced a competition for affordable housing projects, with applications being accepted from the beginning of this week.
The commission's report defines affordable housing as "homes that are in good condition, suitable for their occupants and cost less than a third of the occupants' income."
It also states that about 44,100 households in Nova Scotia, about 11.4 per cent of all provincial households, do not have housing that qualifies.
