Workers at Canadian military bases go on strike
In Ontario and Quebec, will the military go without food and rest?
While Canada reports on military operations in the planet's Eastern Hemisphere, trouble is brewing right in the heartland. Civilian employees at military bases in Ontario and Quebec have called a strike.
We are talking about nearly 500 workers who are dissatisfied with their paychecks and lack of security. They are responsible for food, recreation, and helping military and veterans plan their finances and other issues. The Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Union of National Defence Employees report that at 6:30 a.m. on January 15, their members marched with placards to the entrances of workplaces.
The strike affected military bases in various cities, including Montreal, Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario. Union leader Chris Aylward expressed a common view: workers want a new contract with the good conditions they deserve.
The union explains that non-state fund agency employees are paid significantly less than employees doing similar work in the core federal civil service. Their last contract was signed back in 2022.
