It will be easier than ever for British young people to go to work in Canada

And Canadian youth will be able to go to work to the United Kingdom.

The governments of Canada and the United Kingdom are committed to providing youth in their countries with work opportunities that allow young people to realize their full potential. That's why this week, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser and UK Minister of State for Immigration Robert Jenrick announced the signing of a new Canada-UK Youth Mobility Arrangement. The document was signed by Fraser and the British High Commissioner to Canada, Susannah Goshko.

Through this agreement, more young people from Canada and the UK will be able to travel to the UK and Canada respectively under International Experience Canada and the UK's Youth Mobility Scheme to gain work experience there for a longer period of time. The new agreement builds on the youth mobility partnership between the countries, which began in 2008, and includes a number of improvements:

  • the allowable age of program participants increases from 19-30 years old to 18-35 years old;

  • In addition to the existing Working Holiday stream, which allowed British citizens to come to Canada, there will be two new streams — IInternship and Young Professionals;

  • the period that participants will be able to stay will increase from 2 to 3 years..

The International Youth Mobility Program allows young people to experience new cultures, languages and societies while developing their professional skills and opening up new job prospects for the future. Improvements to youth mobility programs in both countries are expected to start in 2024.
