Toronto realtors found the term "master bedroom" offensive

Real estate ads will soon be affected by changes.

The Toronto Regional Real Estate Board decided not to use the term "master bedroom", replacing it with "master bedroom". The master bedroom was the main or largest bedroom in a house or apartment.

Lisa Patel, president of the Council, said the new term will be used in all materials on the Council's web portal in the coming months. She said the word "host" could be perceived as a reference to racism, sexism and slavery. The changes were also approved by the Regional Real Estate Board of Directors.

The Canadian Real Estate Association has already moved to use the term "master bedroom" on Canada's largest portal Realtor.ca in October 2020 following a recommendation from the Real Estate Standards Organization.
