Calgary will have affordable housing for seniors

The new complex will include a care center and a low-income housing unit.

On April 7, Ahmed Hussain, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Canada (also responsible minister for the Canada Housing and Mortgage Corporation), announced that the Government of Canada will invest up to $12.5 million CAD in the construction of the Templemont Seniors Centre in Calgary.

"The elderly have worked for our country and continue to help by staying home. We need to keep them safe and healthy, and that's more important now than ever," Hussain said.

The plan is to build two buildings with a total capacity of up to 120 people. One building with a capacity of up to 70 people will be designed for people with special needs, and the second, with 50 beds, will be for low-income elderly people.

Construction is already underway and is being led by the Alberta Trinity Place Foundation, a respected non-profit organization that is also dedicated to housing in the province of Alberta. Chair of the foundation's board, Susan Mally, says it plans to welcome its first residents as early as the fall of 2021.

Funding from the Canadian government is under the national housing strategy. Calgary will invest $354,000 CAD in the project.
