Ottawa allowed entry with expired permanent residency documents

Once travel restrictions due to COVID-19 are relaxed, Ottawa will accept applicants regardless of the length of their COPR.

Immigration officials said those who received Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) after March 18, 2020, when travel restrictions went into effect, will be allowed to come to Canada even with expired documents.

"Applicants with expired COPRs will be able to renew them as soon as they enter Canada," immigration officials said.

The Immigration Department is monitoring the situation, and assures that COPR holders who have expired will not have to reapply.

By law, the proof of permanent residence is not renewable. Mendicino's office is taking the exceptional step because travel restrictions from Canada have caused the problem.

"It doesn't matter if the documents are valid right now. We will make sure that new residents who are approved after March 18 can come to Canada as soon as the restrictions are lifted," immigration officials said.
