The most unconventional yet reliable way to immigrate to the USA
You probably haven't thought about this!
The United States is one of the most attractive countries to live in, drawing countless people from around the world. However, immigrating there isn't easy. There's a less obvious way to move to the States — through Canada.
Why Consider Canada as a Path to the US
First, it's important to note that immigration to the US comes with serious restrictions. Visa lotteries, study programs, and work visas all have challenges and don't guarantee success. Conversely, Canada has clear immigration programs, and if you meet their requirements, you have a real chance of getting permanent residency. There are over 120 such programs designed for various categories of immigrants.
For example, enrolling in a Canadian university is almost a guaranteed way to stay permanently. Unlike the US, graduates of Canadian public universities receive work permits for up to 3 years, which greatly eases the process of adaptation and job hunting. There are also immigration programs for skilled and unskilled workers and entrepreneurs. Many programs don't require you to study in Canada or find an employer in advance.
After living in Canada as a permanent resident for 3 years (or less if you worked or studied there before), you can apply for Canadian citizenship. This is where it gets interesting: Canadian citizenship opens up many opportunities for moving to the US.
Canadian citizens don't need a visa for tourist and business trips to the States or studying. You can stay in the US for up to 6 months without a visa. These privileges are not available to those who only have permanent resident status in Canada, so obtaining citizenship is a key step.
There are 3 main ways Canadian citizens can use to move to the US.
TN Visa
The TN visa is only for citizens of Canada and Mexico who want to work in the US in a qualified profession. This visa is issued based on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
To get a TN visa, you need an invitation from a US employer for a qualified profession. Eligible professions include accountants, engineers, lawyers, pharmacists, scientists, teachers, programmers, and other specialists. A bachelor's degree or higher is also required.
Canadian citizens don't even need to apply for TN worker status in advance. This can be done directly when crossing the US-Canada border. The TN visa is issued for up to 3 years, after which it can be extended, or you can leave the US and reapply at the border.
