Canada's Population to Reach 63 Million by 2073

Canada

Immigration will be a key factor in this process.

Statistics Canada projects that the country's population could reach 63 million by 2073. According to the agency, immigration will be the main driver of population growth, while natural increase will play a secondary role due to an aging population and low birth rates.

Statistics also predict that the population will grow from about 40 million in 2023 to a range of 47 million to 87 million over the next fifty years, with an average forecast of 63 million. This includes an increase in the number of citizens aged 85 and older, from 896,600 in 2023 to 3.3-4.3 million by 2073.

However, according to forecasts, not all provinces will be able to sustain population growth. For example, the populations of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Quebec are likely to decrease as a percentage of Canada's total population until 2048. At the same time, scenarios predict an increase in the population share of Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia in the overall population of the country.
