Canada demands Iran admit responsibility for shooting down Ukrainian plane

A new phase of international proceedings.

Canadian authorities have honored the victims of a plane crash that occurred exactly 4 years ago. On January 8, 2020, Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 from Tehran was shot down minutes after takeoff.

Among the 176 people killed in the tragedy were 55 Canadian citizens and 30 residents. Iran admits that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched 2 surface-to-air missiles that were aimed at the downed Boeing.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly delivered an address on the anniversary of the tragedy:

"Iran must take full legal responsibility for taking the lives of 176 innocent people and forever changing the lives of their loved ones. Iran owes this to Canada, to the world and, most importantly, to the victims and their families. Today, and every day, we remember and honour the legacies of those whose lives were so cruelly cut short."

In addition to Canadians, there were citizens of Ukraine, Sweden and Great Britain on board the plane. For 4 years, these 4 states have been trying to hold Iran accountable. The next step today was an appeal to the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which was emphasized by Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez:

"We’re taking action before the International Court of Justice and now ICAO as well to hold Iran to account for its actions. We’ll continue working hard to help prevent similar tragedies from ever happening again."
