Turkey has eased entry for tourists from Canada

Canadians have been spared from having to pay the fee.

Turkey has waived visa requirements for Canadian tourists who intend to stay in the country for up to 90 days. Previously, Canadians had to pay a US$ 60 entry fee. Now the Canadian Foreign Ministry only urges citizens to check their passports at the border — to make sure the entry is stamped.

The Turkish Embassy said the change took effect for Canadians on December 26, 2023, and the Turks first announced it back on December 23. In addition to Canadians, passport holders from the United States, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia were also affected by a similar ease of entry.

The policy change follows a decree signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as part of a broad agreement with the European Union. It applies only to tourists — work visas, business visas, student visas and medical visas remain mandatory.

If you need to apply for such a visa, you should contact a consulate or use the official website of the Turkish government to apply online and receive an e-visa. However, the Turkish side reserves the right to refuse entry to e-visa holders without explanation.

The 90-day visa-free period for tourists is valid every six months for 180 days. To qualify for a subsequent visa-free entry to Turkey for a 90-day period, one must leave the country for at least 90 days before being allowed to re-enter for another 90 days.
