Book of the Year recaps from Prince Edward Island
A list of the most popular books in the province.
The Prince Edward Island Public Library Service set a new attendance record in 2023. Residents of the province cumulatively borrowed more than half a million items available to them throughout the year: books, musical instruments, tools, sports equipment and more.
The abundance of services offered at libraries may surprise a foreigner, but in Canada in general and Prince Edward Island in particular, it's an effective way to attract more visitors — and increase interest in reading. The province's Minister of Education, Natalie Jameson, commented:
"Today's libraries are more than just books, they are community hubs where our dedicated staff support Islanders with a full range of items, programs and services."
In the last days of the year, the province's libraries summarized the overall results, which were as follows:
- top adult fiction book — A World of Curiosities by Louise Penny;
- top adult non-fiction book — Spare by Prince Harry;
- top DVD - Top Gun: Maverick;
- top children's book - The Thank You Book by Mo Williams;
- top french book - Super Chien: Sa majesté des puces by Dav Pilkey;
- top adult fiction eAudiobook – The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes;
- top adult fiction eBook – Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover;
- top adult non-fiction eAudiobook – Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed;
- top adult non-fiction eBook – All My Knotted-Up Life: A Memoir by Beth Moore / The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann.
A total of 153,239 eAudiobooks and e-books were taken in 2023.
There are 25 public libraries throughout the province where residents can borrow books, DVDs and other materials, access the Internet and enjoy a variety of free programs. Membership is free to all islanders. For a complete list of libraries and their schedules, see the website.
