Alberta announced a partnership with the Lviv region

The province has once again come out in favor of Ukraine.

The Alberta government has announced an updated Memorandum of Understanding with the Lviv region of Ukraine for continued cooperation. The regions share a wealth of natural resources, including oil, gas, sulfur, potash and salt.

The memorandum was first signed in 2005 and then updated in 2017. It aims to recognize the long-standing friendship and cultural connection between Lviv Oblast of Ukraine and the Canadian province of Alberta.

The memorandum also identifies many potential areas of cooperation, including energy, agriculture, health, economic development, humanitarian assistance, arts and culture, justice, governance, and technology. Partnerships in the energy sector could include hydrocarbon production, renewable energy, and greenhouse gas emission reduction.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says renewing the memorandum now is another way to remind them of their position on what's happening in Ukraine, a way to express support for the country in a time of war:

"Ukraine and Alberta have incredibly strong ties. Our histories are deeply intertwined and we are proud of this connection. Renewing Alberta’s MOU with the Lviv region is one more way Alberta remains committed to supporting the people of Ukraine."

The Memorandum of Understanding will be valid for five years. It does not create any legal obligations for the parties.
