Saskatchewan government launches service to calculate child support payments

This will avoid the need for litigation.

The Government of Saskatchewan is launching a special service to help calculate child support. This measure comes as part of a program that started back in 2018. It offers separated parents a faster and more efficient way to approve the amount for existing child support orders.

Justice Minister and Provincial Attorney General Bronwyn Eyre spoke about the pros of such a service:

"The family court process can be costly, complex, time-consuming, and cause great stress to parents and children. This service aims to reduce some of that financial burden and anxiety and allow parents to focus on the wellbeing of their children."

Since 2018, the Recalculation Service has issued more than 507 recalculations and helped 776 children receive the amount of child support they are entitled to, saving families the expense of legal fees and going to court. Last year, the Recalculation Service issued a record 124 child support awards.

There have already been 91 such decisions in 2023, and that number is projected to increase with the addition of the settlement service, allowing the service to surpass last year's record.

What other help can I count on?

As of October 2022, there is a pilot project in Regina and Saskatoon to review family court applications. It is possible to verify that the documents meet all requirements. In addition, police officers are trained to spot signs of domestic violence at this stage — and are authorized to refer people to specialists.
