The Department of Immigration is going to fund organizations that help newcomers

Applications are being accepted for the tender that will determine the recipients of state investments.

The Government of Canada considers helping immigrants its responsibility, and therefore announces a competition for funding among specialized organizations. Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced the launch of a call for applications for companies that provide vital services to newcomers. The funding contracts will be for five years.

"As we welcome more newcomers to Canada, we need to make sure they have the support they need to succeed in their new lives. We will continue to support settlement and resettlement service providers who play a crucial role in ensuring newcomers have the resources they need for their continued success across the country. Canada values the economic, social and cultural contributions of newcomers to their communities."

What services are considered meaningful and useful to immigrants:

  • language training;
  • job search assistance;
  • creating connections with longtime immigrants, Canadians and Indigenous peoples;
  • finding a place to live;
  • social adaptation (enroll children in school);
  • targeted assistance to Francophone newcomers, racial and other minorities, LGBTQ persons.

The organizations that provide these services help newcomers integrate and build successful lives in Canada, and help employers, schools and other organizations create welcoming communities. Ultimately, it is their work that helps immigrants integrate successfully.

Between 2022 and 2023, the number of people seeking settlement and resettlement services in Canada reached an all-time high of nearly 612,000.

Applications for funding will be accepted until January 31, 2024. The Ministry of Immigration plans to invest about CA$ 1.1 billion per year in the selected applicants.
