Hundred of raccoons seized from Ontario rehab center

The animal holding center denies all charges filed against them.

Ontario has seized nearly 100 raccoons from a rehabilitation center. The reason is accusations that the organization Mally's Third Chance Raccoon Rescue has violated the provincial Wildlife Protection Act. Representatives of the animal welfare center say they did nothing wrong.

On September 26, more than 50 Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry staff arrived in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario and seized 95 raccoons. The animals are currently being held in a protected area under the care of veterinarians.

The center's owners face more than 20 charges, including illegally keeping raccoons for more than 12 months and illegally domesticating them.

Tiffany Devon, a volunteer at the center, commented on the situation for the media:

"95 percent of the animals were juvenile raccoons that we had had for weeks to months and were just about ready to be released over the next few days to a couple of weeks."

The girl also said that this was the first visit of the Ministry's staff in the last 18 months. She added that the staff and volunteers of the center are now most concerned about the fate of the seized animals.
