A writers' festival kicks off in British Columbia

A writers

The program includes master classes and meetings with authors and publishers.

From October 12 until the very end of the week of October 15, the resort town of Whistler in British Columbia will host the Writers Festival. It is an annual event that brings together fans of literature and writing from across Canada.

The festival attracts local, regional and internationally renowned Canadian writers. This is how Whistler's writing community fulfills two of its most important missions:

  • Introducing readers and writers alike to some of today's best-known as well as emerging Canadian authors;
  • Creating a platform for the development of promising local writers.

At the Whistler Festival, everything is organized so that aspiring authors can improve their skills, find a publisher, be inspired by networking with other creative people, and get support for further professional development. You can attend the festival events not only in person, but also online, though a quick registration on the website is required.

So, what's on the program this year:

  1. A series of workshops on finding and working with publishers. Everyone will learn about the publishing landscape in Canada and have time to pitch their idea!
  2. Workshops on how to improve your manuscript and how to interact with editors.
  3. A workshop to get feedback from more experienced colleagues on your manuscript.
  4. Lots of semi-formal meetings for socializing, exchanging ideas.
  5. Of course, public readings and discussions in an atmosphere of togetherness with pen professionals.
  6. Master classes on working with your story: how to make the language more lively and interesting, and the narrative — rich and clear.
  7. Party, buffet, stand-up performances, and thus an opportunity not only to have a good time, but also a great vacation.

Most events are not free. You can buy passes for in-person or online attendance and save a lot of money. Or you can pay only for the events you are interested in. They generally range in price from a couple or three dozen Canadian dollars each. Passes for readings and for workshops cost CA$ 350 and CA$ 170, respectively.
