New Brunswick will provide meals for school children

The province is investing in a food program.

The New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has announced the expansion of its school nutrition program. The provincial government has set a goal of providing students with healthy food and has contracted with Food Depot Alimentaire.

This was revealed by New Brunswick's Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Bill Hogan. He said the ultimate goal of the program is to provide meals to all students in all schools of the province.

The authority has now invested CA$ 2 million in a partnership with Food Depot Alimentaire to do just that. The money will be used to provide healthy food to 42 additional schools in seven New Brunswick counties — until the end of the contract on March 31, 2024.

The organization has already participated in more than 90 food programs in schools across the province during the 2022-23 school year. Stéphane Sirois, Executive Director of Food Depot Alimentaire, commented on the new deal:

"We are thrilled to partner with the provincial government to support additional school nutrition programs again this year, particularly in northern areas where need has been identified."

At the same time, the Department of Education promised to work to ensure that the supply of healthy food continues through the end of the school year.
