Canada continues to provide comprehensive support to Ukraine
Canada and Ukraine negotiate security cooperation
Last week we reported on the appointment of a new Canadian ambassador to Ukraine. But that's not the end of the news about Canada-Ukraine diplomatic relations. Late last week, government officials from the two countries met to discuss long-term security commitments. During the meeting, Canadian officials reiterated their readiness to use all of the country's tools to support Ukraine.
These talks will build on existing efforts already underway by the countries in in several priority areas and will also strengthen bilateral cooperation in the coming years. The discussions focus on matching Canadian capabilities with Ukrainian needs, particularly in providing forces to protect Ukraine's sovereignty, as well as strengthening the country's economic stability and resilience. In addition, the countries will discuss further technical and financial support for Ukraine's immediate needs and Canadian assistance to Ukraine in implementing the governance necessary to advance Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic aspirations, such as continued reforms to Ukraine's law enforcement and judiciary, corporate governance, economy, security sector, and public administration, and anti-corruption efforts.
Canada and its allies endorsed the G7 Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine on the margins of the NATO summit in July, and Canada became the third G7 member country to begin bilateral talks with Ukraine under the framework of the declaration. Canada feels obligated to provide unwavering support to Ukraine in these challenging times, especially given the longstanding friendship and partnership between the countries.
