Smokefree Canada is taking smoking cessation to the next level

Canada will become the first country to start printing health warnings on every cigarette.

Canada will be the first country to print warnings about the dangers of smoking and nicotine addiction on every single cigarette. This is expected to deter young people from starting to smoke and further motivate smokers to quit. The warnings will be printed in English and French and contain phrases like "cigarettes cause cancer" and "poison in every puff".

Tobacco manufacturers are expected to start working on implementing this update as early as this week, and Canadians will start seeing the new warnings on cigarettes next year.

By July 2024, cigarette manufacturers will be required to ensure that warnings are on all king-size cigarettes sold, and by April 2025, on all regular-size cigarettes, small filter cigars, and smoking tube products.

Warning phrases will be applied at the filter. These include warnings about harm to children, negative effects on internal organs, impotence and leukemia. In May, Health Canada promised that the new rules would "will make it virtually impossible to avoid health warnings" on tobacco products.

A second set of 6 more phrases is expected to start being printed on tobacco products in 2026.
