Canada responds to the challenges of nature

The Department of Natural Resources will provide $15 million CAD for climate change adaptation initiatives.

Climate change affects people's lives across Canada. Every year the country faces climate-related phenomena such as wildfires, extreme heat and floods. Melting permafrost and rising sea levels don't inspire positivity either. Canada understands that only hard work and a concerted effort to reduce the risks associated with climate change will keep its people safe. Such efforts will also protect the economy from shocks and avoid the excessive costs associated with dealing with natural disasters.

This week, Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson announced a call for proposals for projects that could receive funding under the Climate Change Adaptation Program. The five-year program, in support of Canada's National Adaptation Strategy, is designed to help Canadian regions and industries prepare for climate change and its potential impacts. The Climate Change Adaptation Program will fund the development of tools and resources to develop adaptation skills, prepare the economy for climate change, protect natural resource sectors, and address the challenges of adapting to changing climate conditions.

The Natural Resources Canada accepts proposals for co-financing projects up to CAD 15 million Commercial and non-profit organizations such as organizations of indigenous peoples, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, industrial, research and professional associations, companies and enterprises, as well as governments and their provincial, territorial and municipal departments, are eligible for funding.

More information was promised at the virtual information session on July 18.
