The abortion case is widely discussed in Canada

The bill stirs up a debate about abortion in Canada, although the idea behind the bill is quite different.

In Canada abortion is legal and not restricted anyhow by law. However, the Conservative MP's bill has divided all political forces.

Cathay Wagantall has advanced a bill that would encourage judges to consider physical or emotional harm as an aggravating factor when sentencing someone who assaults a pregnant woman.

"It is focused on pregnant women being attacked by a third party who wants to cause injury or death to that individual," said Wagantall, a Saskatchewan MP.

Wagantall's position is well-known; she opposes a woman's right to an abortion. However, she said that the legislation known as Bill C-311 has nothing to do with this and is entirely focused on violence against women.

This is what sparked controversy among supporters of a woman's right to control her own body. The Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada urges MPs to vote against the bill on the grounds that it promotes fetal rights, even though there is no mention of fetal rights in the text of the bill itself.

Private member's bills rarely become law and this one is similarly unlikely to get through the House of Commons, but it has revived abortion as issue among parliamentarians.
