The number of immigrants in Ontario will double

The government has announced an expansion of Ontario's immigration program.

The federal government has reached an agreement with Ontario under which the province will be able to welcome significantly more immigrants.

Ontario is currently experiencing labor market issues — the government hopes that the influx of skilled workers will remedy the situation and have a positive impact on the province's economy. Last year a record number of 431,000 immigrants came to Canada; more than 200,000 of them settled in Ontario.

Like other provinces, Ontario accepts a certain number of people through its immigration program. In 2022, 9,750 people moved to Ontario through the provincial program. The province plans to increase the number of nominations for the program to 18,000 by 2025.

The expansion of the program targets skilled immigrants: trades workers, truck drivers, IT workers, medical workers, and others.
