Quebec meets the needs of foreign drivers

The province loosened the rules for driving without a local license.

Immigrants who became residents of Quebec and want to drive a vehicle must obtain a local driver's license. With a license from another country, they can drive for no more than 6 months. After 6 months, immigrants lose their right to drive without a local license.

The issuing of driving licenses and insurance in Quebec is handled by the government agency SAAQ. Because of the large number of applications, the agency has extended the period of permission to drive with a foreign license until August 29, 2023. The only condition is that the license is valid in the territory in which it was obtained.

Thanks to the innovation, drivers will have more time to get a local driver's license. Depending on the country where the license was obtained, new residents of Quebec may have to retake driving tests: a theory test and practice with an instructor.
