International graduates will be hired even with expired work permits

Canada will extend work permits for former students.

Graduates of some Canadian universities can stay in Canada by obtaining a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after completing their studies. Depending on the duration of studies, the permit is granted for a period ranging from 8 months to 3 years.

For many international students, a work permit is a chance to stay in Canada and later apply for permanent residency. In order to obtain permanent residency it is necessary to gain professional experience. However, a work permit often expires before the person has time to find a suitable position. To solve this problem, the government will allow graduates to extend their work permits — for up to 18 months.

It will be possible to extend both a valid work permit and one that expired in 2023. Graduates who were eligible to extend their PGWP in 2022 (on a similar measure) will qualify for the extension as well.

Minister of Immigration Sean Fraser said that in the long run, talented and educated workers will benefit the nation's economy. He said it is necessary to support employers who are having trouble finding employees.

A shortage of skilled workers is a problem Canada has been facing since the COVID-19 pandemic. Extending the PGWP will not only give graduates valuable work experience but will also improve the labor market situation.
