Beer and wine sales in Canada fell to a record low

Canadians seem to be losing their taste for alcohol. According to the findings of a new report, beer and wine sales have reached historic lows.

Beer sales per person in Canada have plummeted since 2021-22. Tougher drinking regulations and a new alcohol tax increase scheduled for April 1 signal that further changes are looming. Despite the trend, however, it is the beer that remains the most popular alcohol in the country.

A report released by Statistics Canada, the government's data collector, showed that alcohol sales fell by 1.2% for the first time in a decade. Wine sales were down 4%, the biggest decline the department has ever recorded.

According to the report, the time when beer held the top spot in alcoholic beverage sales is passing. Over the past 10 years, beer has lost significantly, down 8.8%.

Meanwhile, ciders and wine coolers have taken most of the lost market share, up 5%, the highest market share growth of any alcoholic beverage category.
