Government wasted billions of dollars on COVID-19 payments
A fall 2022 audit of the Department of National Revenue found that several billion dollars were sent to ineligible recipients.
According to the audit, $211 billion CAD was spent on benefits. Of that, $4.6 billion CAD went to those citizens who were not eligible. Another $27.4 CAD will be audited.
The report stated that $1.5 billion CAD was given to 710,000 citizens who received more than one benefit during the period. Subsidies were also incorrectly paid to businesses.
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government acted quickly and decisively to save as many lives and the economy as possible. As a result, Canada was able to avoid serious economic damage and social consequences, such as a significant increase in poverty.
