The issue of severing ties with the monarchy is raised again in Canada

Quebec deputies find loyalty to the conquering state demeaning.

After the change of power in the United Kingdom, the question of the future of the monarchy in Canada became acute. Though the country is actually governed by a Prime Minister, formally the head of the Canadian state is the British monarch, now King Charles III.

Negative sentiments toward the monarchy have been present for a long time, but now the situation has worsened. After the provincial elections in Quebec, deputies from two parties refused to take the oath of office to the King. Then, on October 25, the Bloc Québécois party called on the federal government to break off relations with the British monarchy.

During his speech, party leader Yves-François Blanchet said that loyalty to a foreign state is degrading, outdated, and costly, and accused the monarchy of racism and archaicism.

It is expected that the issue will be considered in parliament on October 26. However, in order to abandon the monarchy, Canada will have to change the constitution, which requires the approval of all the provinces, the House of Commons, and the Senate.

Even now the idea has opponents. For example, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau believes that people are not interested in abandoning the monarchy, as it is more important for them that the government fights against rising prices, climate change, and solves the jobs problem. Many MPs also criticized the Bloc's proposal, saying that the party is distracting the government from the really important issues.
