Three Canadian cities are in the top ten best places to live

At the same time Toronto is recognized as the most expensive city in Canada.

The Economist Intelligence Unit, the analytical arm of The Economist has once again ranked 172 cities. Each of them is assigned points, evaluating parameters in five categories: stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

Calgary, Alberta was the most comfortable place to live in Canada, ranking 3rd overall. Vancouver came in 5th place, overtaking Toronto, which came in 8th place this year.

After the results were announced, Joti Gondek, mayor of Calgary, happily noted, "The rise in the rankings reflects the welcoming nature of our city, its accessibility and the opportunities on offer to entrepreneurs. We exude optimism and invite people to join us in shaping our future."

Calgary received a total score of 96.3, with the city's health care, education and infrastructure rated at 100 out of a possible 100 points.

The geopolitical situation could not help but affect the balance of power: compared to last year, Moscow and St. Petersburg were placed on lower positions, and Kiev was excluded from the assessment.

The first and second places this time went to Vienna, Austria and Copenhagen, Denmark.

Despite its objectivity, the EIU list does not take into account the cost of living. For potential immigrants this is an important factor for relocation, so it is worth taking into account the annual cost of living index of the international consulting company Mercer, which also published the results of its study.

Toronto, Ontario moved up in the rankings to become Canada's most expensive city, ranking 89th overall. The top 5 most expensive Canadian cities for 2022 look like this:

Mercer stresses that Canada's economy, which remains a comfortable and relatively affordable place to live, is experiencing all the same difficulties as the rest of the developed world: a spike in inflation, the global health crisis and military conflicts are exacerbating the situation and inevitably affecting the rising cost of living.
