How do Canadians feel about the unrestricted admission of refugees from Ukraine?
The results of the poll of March 16, 2022.
A new study by the non-profit Angus Reid Institute, a Canadian public opinion research organization, found that 80 percent of Canadians approve of their government's plans to accept refugees. More than 2.5 million people have left Ukraine since the start of hostilities, most of whom are now in Poland. Poland cannot support that many refugees.
The number of Canadians who approve of arms deliveries to Ukraine has almost tripled in the past six weeks — now it is 48%. The number of Canadians who believe that Canada should continue to provide humanitarian aid to Ukrainians is still higher — 79%. 68% approve of economic sanctions against Russia.
Canada has a large Ukrainian diaspora, 1.4 million people. This explains why Ukrainian refugees are treated very differently than Syrian refugees. In 2015, only 39% of Canadians approved of accepting Syrian refugees.
