Canada says it is ready to provide new support measures for Ukrainian refugees
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the president of Poland to discuss the procedure for bringing Ukrainian refugees to Canada.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Polish President Andrzej Duda on March 10 as part of a European tour. The two leaders discussed how to quickly arrange flights from Poland to Canada with refugees on board. One option under consideration is an airlift operation.
Just a few blocks from the presidential palace, Warsaw's main train station on Thursday was filled with thousands of Ukrainian refugees. Mostly women and children, who lined up for food, medical care and shelter. Duda said Poland accounted for about 1.5 million refugees out of the 2 million total Ukrainians who fled their country.
"We could have a deep, deep crisis in the future," he noted.
Trudeau visited a hostel in Warsaw, where 15 refugees from five different families live. He spoke to some of them, expressing support on behalf of all the Canadian people.
As part of his visit to Poland, Trudeau met, among others, with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, who was also in the Polish capital and had met with Duda earlier in the day.
Canada is working closely with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees across Eastern Europe to find ways to bring refugees to Canada from other countries following safe passage agreements. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie said International Development Minister Harjeet Sajjan is now in Moldova and is in talks with the UN refugee agency to coordinate further Canadian action.
