Canadians are actively moving to the west

The pandemic is forcing more and more Canadians to move to large urban centres.

According to Statistics Canada, interprovincial migration to British Columbia more than doubled in the second half of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. This trend increased further in the first quarter of 2021.

Interestingly, other metropolitan areas in Canada, by contrast, are undergoing outflows: -21% in Montreal, -12.2% in Toronto, -18.9% in Hamilton and -7.8% in London.

There is speculation that the pandemic has prompted more Canadians to rethink their priorities, particularly lifestyle changes, better work-life balance — something that could be provided in Vancouver. Milder climate, a vibrant sporting life in the province, and proximity to beaches, mountains and nature are cited as possible relocation factors.

Vancouver's economy and job market have also experienced a stronger boom compared to other major urban centres. Its burgeoning and growing technology industry offers more opportunities, making the metropolis attractive to young professionals.
