The government has set a new goal as part of achieving Canada's intention to become carbon-neutral by 2050.

In order to create a cleaner, more prosperous economy that is resilient to climate change and creates good jobs, the Government of Canada is taking action to reduce pollution in all sectors. This includes the transport sector, which accounts for a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions.

The Government of Canada has set a goal for all new cars and trucks to be carbon-free by 2035. To achieve this goal, the Government of Canada plans to manage the process through investments and regulations.

"Through measures to accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicle sales, we will continue to build a cleaner, more sustainable economy and create good jobs and opportunities for all Canadians," said Transportation Minister Omar Algabra.

The auto industry is investing hundreds of billions of dollars to accelerate its plans to electrify vehicles, including recent commitments to retrofit several Canadian auto plants. The Canadian government has also introduced new measures to support the automotive sector's transition to zero-emission vehicles. One of these includes a 50% corporate tax reduction for businesses that produce carbon-free vehicles. Similar incentives are planned to be implemented to attract green car buyers.

With passenger cars remaining in service for about 15 years, the requirement that 100% of vehicles have zero emissions by 2035 will also help Canada on its way to its long-term goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.
