All Canadian communities are adversely affected by climate change

A new report has identified key areas of focus for Canada as part of its response to climate challenges

Communities across the country are experiencing the impacts of climate change, from extreme events such as wildfires, floods, heat waves, to sea level rise, ice melt and permafrost. All of this underscores the need for climate change adaptation measures in Canada.

In response to this global challenge, Environment Canada has released a report, Climate Change: A National Challenge. It describes how a changing climate is affecting the environment, the economy and many aspects of daily life in Canada, and provides insight into how Canada is adapting to these impacts.

Key findings show that Canadian communities of all sizes are being impacted by climate change on their infrastructure, health, culture and economy. The problem also threatens Canadian ecosystems and vital services, including access to fresh water. As these challenges will only intensify, urgent action is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build climate resilience through adaptation.

Strengthening action on climate change and making communities more resilient to the impacts of the problem is a top priority for the government. Canada has developed a strengthened climate plan, Healthy Environment and Healthy Economy, with 64 key actions to meet climate goals.
