International students increase New Brunswick

More than half of graduates of Atlantic Canada's popular training and residency program have already found work in the province.

Funded by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Department of Education, Training and Employment, the program is designed for international students who aspire to live and work in Atlantic Canada. It provides the skills, connections and support needed for students to start successful careers immediately after graduation.

A participant from Brazil, Leonardo Silva, said the program helped him make important contacts and provided him with the knowledge and tools he needed to grow and establish himself in New Brunswick.

"The support throughout the program helped me make the decision to stay in New Brunswick and choose the best immigration path for my family," Silva said. — "I just have to thank the Study and Stay program and its creators for supporting us to feel welcomed and supported along the way."

Each year, up to 60 international students and more than 30 community mentors are recruited to participate in the program and support participants' professional learning goals. This year's cohort included 64 graduates in fields such as computer science and information technology, finance, engineering, environmental studies and business administration. More than half of this year's cohort has already secured jobs in New Brunswick, a significant contribution to the province's population growth and economic growth strategy.
