No miracle: the travel ban has been extended
Hopes of opening the borders again failed to materialize.
Despite numerous statements that Canada may relax border restrictions, the ban on foreigners has been extended again for a month. This was confirmed by Public Safety Minister Bill Blair on Twitter. The Canada-U.S. land border also remains closed.
"Our first priority in the fight against COVID-19 is to ensure the safety of Canadians. In consultation with the United States, we are extending restrictions on non-essential international travel, including to the United States, until July 21, 2021," Blair wrote.
However, the minister added that the government will announce new rules this week for fully vaccinated citizens and residents of Canada, as well as those who are eligible to enter the country.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged that extending travel restrictions could upset many people, but stressed that Canada must meet its goal before easing measures: 75% of residents vaccinated with one dose and 20% with two doses.
Earlier, the government said it plans to cancel quarantine hotels on arrival from abroad for fully vaccinated Canadian residents on July 1.
