Canada-US border closed for another month

The restrictions are once again being extended.

Once again, Canada and the United States are extending the closed borders regime for another month — until 21 June. This has been the case since March 2020, when the countries first imposed travel restrictions.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the lifting of restrictions would be contingent on vaccinations and low incidence rates. However, Canadian officials earlier reported that preliminary talks with the U.S. on opening the borders had already began.

"We're all eager to get back to normal, but we know we need to get cases under control before we do that and vaccinate more than 75 percent of the population," Trudeau said.

While Canadians are eagerly awaiting the opening of the borders, the Ontario government says the federal government should, on the contrary, tighten restrictions at the land border. Currently, one can only travel for a good reason: for work, for medical care, etc.
