Navalny's headquarters calls on Canada to impose sanctions against Russian oligarchs

Opposition activists are ready to provide a list of persons to be sanctioned.

Leonid Volkov, Alexei Navalny's chief of staff, has called on the Canadian government to impose sanctions against individuals whom he called "Putin's oligarchs". According to Volkov, freezing their assets would put pressure on the Russian president.

"Every time Europe or the US tries to find a compromise, to establish a dialogue, unfortunately, Putin considers it just a sign of weakness," says Volkov.

He also believes that for Putin, money is "the most important thing in the world" and that the president was offended by Navalny's investigation of his palace, which is why he ordered the poisoning of the oppositionist in August 2020.

Alexei Navalny himself is in jail after being arrested at the airport on January 17 on his return from Germany, where he spent several months recovering from poisoning.

In March, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau announced sanctions against 9 Russian officials to put pressure on senior figures in the government believed to be involved in poisoning Navalny, prosecuting him, and suppressing protests by Russian citizens.

Volkov said it was important to impose personal sanctions against officials rather than economic sanctions against the country, which he said allow the Kremlin to misinform the population and blame Western countries for Russia's economic decline, but called the past list "weak."
