International students may be denied entry to Ontario
Quarantine measures in the province are getting tougher.
On April 30, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that international students may not be able to come to Ontario anytime soon. In a meeting with provincial representatives a day earlier, Ontario Premier Doug Ford asked the federal government to do more to combat the pandemic.
"Premier Ford has asked us to suspend the entry of international students," Trudeau revealed. — Since Ontario is currently the only province with such a request, we will work with it individually."
Neither provincial nor federal authorities have yet voiced when the changes will take effect.
At the moment, although Canada's borders for foreigners are closed, the ban does not apply to students. They can enter the country with a study permit and an invitation from the university.
Ford has also asked the federal government to impose a mandatory 3-day hotel quarantine for those crossing the Canadian land border. Right now, such a rule only applies to travelers arriving by plane, so people use the loophole — flying into the U.S. and driving into Canada by taxi.
The province of Ontario itself has established checkpoints at its borders. You can come from other regions of Canada only if you have a good reason.
