Canadians are ready to return to the offices, but with conditions

What do employees want when they return to the workplace?

A new survey shows that people who work remotely are reluctant to return to the office full-time. 33% of respondents even said they would look for a new job if their current one did not allow them to stay in "remote" work after the pandemic.

According to the survey, 51 per cent of Canadians want to combine telecommuting with an office job in the future, 30 per cent want to work exclusively from home and only 19 per cent would prefer to move completely into an office.

Those who are considering returning to the office (either fully or partially) have made their wish list for the future format of work. The most frequent among them were:

  • the ability to set the operating hours independently;
  • payment of transportation costs;
  • personal space, free from distractions;
  • no dress code;
  • the employer's assistance with childcare.

Interviewees say that the listed "bonuses" would be able to convince them to return to the office.

Such reluctance to return to regular work does not mean that "distant work" is free of problems. Many respondents are somewhat intimidated by long distance work. Employees are worried about their relationships with colleagues and about the fact that it may be less productive and more difficult to prove oneself in order to achieve career advancement at home.
