Windsor University Has Blazed a New Trail in Medicine
In addition, the university offered a discount to former students of the language school that closed and opened registration for the 2027 academic year.
The University of Windsor (Windsor, Ontario) has released its September 2026 update: the university has opened applications for upcoming semesters through fall 2027, launched an accelerated path to medical school, released new guides for international students, and offered a $1,500 CAD discount on the ELIP language program to those affected by the closure of ILAC. Immigrant.Today is the official representative of the University of Windsor and reports on the university’s top news stories.
We are now accepting applications
The university accepts applications for multiple academic terms at once. Enrollment is still open for the ELIP 3 level of the English Language Improvement Program (ELIP) for the fall semester of 2026. Classes for this level begin on October 13, 2026; tuition must be paid by October 5, 2026.
For the winter semester of 2027, which begins in January, you can apply for the ELIP program, bachelor’s programs, and master’s programs with a coursework track (without a thesis). Among the master’s programs available for January 2027 are applied computer science, education, engineering, management, and medical biotechnology.
Applications are now being accepted for the 2027 summer semester (InterSummer, beginning in May) for bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the following fields: applied computer science, engineering, and management.
The widest selection is available for the fall semester of 2027, which begins in September. In addition to bachelor’s programs, the following master’s programs with a coursework track are open for enrollment this semester:
- actuarial mathematics;
- applied computer science;
- Master of Business Administration (MBA);
- education;
- engineering;
- engineering project management;
- management;
- medical biotechnology;
- Sports Management and Leadership.
It is important for master’s program applicants to note that, effective January 1, 2026, students in master’s and doctoral programs at public institutions of higher education in Canada are exempt from the requirement to provide a provincial confirmation letter (PAL) and are not subject to the federal quota for study permits. The University of Windsor is a public university, so this rule applies to its master’s students. Undergraduate applicants are still required to submit a PAL.
After completing their master’s degree, graduates may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) valid for up to three years. If a master’s program lasts 16 months or longer, the student’s spouse may obtain an open work permit for the duration of the program. Therefore, when choosing a program, it is important to consider its duration.
A New Fast Track to Medical School
The University of Windsor is launching a new accelerated pathway to medical school. It will allow eligible students from any undergraduate program to transfer to the American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM) after just two years of study in Windsor. ACSOM is a nonprofit medical school located in Dominica that awards the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.

Starting in the fall of 2026, students who meet ACSOM’s academic requirements and admission criteria will be able to pursue a dual degree program leading to both a bachelor’s degree from the University of Windsor and a Doctor of Medicine degree from ACSOM. The entire program can be completed in as little as six years. Under an agreement between the institutions, at least 50 conditional admission spots will be available to University of Windsor students each year.
“This pathway significantly expands opportunities for University of Windsor students who aspire to careers in medicine,” says J. J. McMurtry, the university’s president and chancellor. “Students can pursue a bachelor’s degree in a field that interests them while gaining access to a clear, accelerated pathway that can lead to both a University of Windsor bachelor’s degree and a Doctor of Medicine degree.”
Unlike programs tied to a specific undergraduate major, the University of Windsor’s medical pathway is open to eligible students from all undergraduate programs. Students can tailor their coursework to their own interests while simultaneously completing the required courses and meeting other requirements for admission to ACSOM.
It is important to note that graduates who wish to practice medicine in Canada will need to pass the required exams, complete a residency, and obtain a provincial license. A medical degree alone does not guarantee a spot in a Canadian residency program or a medical license.
New Guides for International Students for the 2026–27 Academic Year
The university has published an International Mini Guide and a Program Guide for the 2026–27 academic year.
The new materials highlight the strong academic programs, vibrant campus life, and unique opportunities that await international students at the University of Windsor. According to the university, these guides are designed to help prospective students take their first steps toward becoming part of a diverse and dynamic university community.
The guidebooks are available to official university representatives in electronic and PDF formats, as well as in print, which can be ordered for delivery to the office. As an official representative of the University of Windsor, Immigrant.Today has access to these materials and can use them during consultations to help students choose a program.
The university thanked its partners for their cooperation and for helping international students on their path to a successful future.
$1,500 CAD Discount on ELIP for ILAC Students
To support students affected by the closure of the ILAC language school, the University of Windsor is offering a $1,500 CAD discount on its ELIP English language improvement program. ILAC ceased operations on September 18, 2026, leaving many students who had planned to apply to universities through its programs without language training. The offer is available to students who can confirm their current or upcoming enrollment at ILAC.
ELIP will help students who have received conditional admission with the requirement to demonstrate English proficiency and who have previously enrolled at ILAC to meet the university's language requirements. The program team is ready to assist both those who have already been studying and those who are just about to begin.
For comparison: the ELIP program costs $4,570 CAD, plus a non-refundable registration fee of $500 CAD and $250 CAD for health insurance for those studying in Canada. A $1,500 CAD discount reduces the cost of the program itself by about one-third.
To receive a discount, you need to:
- register for the ELIP program;
- Enter the promo code ILAC when paying;
- Provide proof of current or upcoming enrollment at ILAC in advance.
A letter of acceptance or a letter confirming enrollment is accepted as proof. Documents must be submitted to the ELIP program office before payment is made.
If you have any questions about the ELIP program or how to apply the discount, the Immigrant.Today team will help you figure it out and prepare the necessary documents. The university, for its part, is looking forward to welcoming new students to Windsor.
Enrique Jea has been appointed registrar of the university
The University of Windsor has appointed Henrique Géa as university registrar, effective October 1, 2026.
Zhea has more than 15 years of experience in higher education. He has worked in student recruitment, academic processes, student information systems, institutional management, and organizational change.
In his new role, Jea will oversee student admissions, academic records, and enrollment services. Together with his colleagues on campus, he will develop policies and processes that support students throughout their academic careers.
“Enrique has extensive experience and has proven his ability to bring about meaningful change in student services and academic processes,” said Dr. Barbara Crow, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Windsor. “We look forward to working with him and continuing to build on the university’s success.”
Sports Management: Ranked No. 1 in Canada for the Fifth Consecutive Year
The University of Windsor’s Master of Sport Management and Leadership program has been ranked No. 1 in Canada for the fifth consecutive year.
The 2026 rankings were published by the international consulting firm SportBusiness. They are based on surveys of program alumni and program directors conducted in 2023 and take into account mentoring, extracurricular activities, industry connections, and the alumni network. Since 2012, when SportBusiness began compiling the rankings, the University of Windsor program has ranked first in Canada 12 times and has consistently been among the top 40 such programs in the world.
Sean Smith, who works as a client manager at XMC, an event marketing and sponsorship agency, was among the alumni who participated in the survey for the 2026 ranking.
"When I look at my classmates, I see that they professionally represent global brands such as the NHL, the NBA, the PWHL, the Olympic Games, and the World Championship," says Smith.
“The foundation for this experience was laid in the sports management program at the University of Windsor. We entered the program hoping to make a difference in sports, and the university gave us that opportunity,” he adds.
The program is available in several formats. The internship track lasts 16 to 20 months, while the dissertation track is designed to last 24 months. Both formats meet the 16-month duration requirement under which a student’s spouse may obtain an open work permit. Applications for this program are now being accepted for fall 2027.
ELIP: English for University Admission
The University of Windsor supports international students through its English Language Improvement Program (ELIP). The program helps students improve their English and succeed in their studies at the university. Successful completion of ELIP Level 3 with a score of at least 75% fulfills the language requirement for admission to bachelor’s and master’s programs, without the need to take the IELTS or TOEFL.
The next ELIP sessions will take place during the fall semester of 2026 (ELIP Level 3, classes from October 13 to December 4, 2026, results announced on December 10) and in the winter semester of 2027. In the winter, ELIP Level 2 will run from January 11 to March 25, 2027, with payment due by January 4, and ELIP Level 3 will run from February 22 to April 16, 2027, with payment due by February 15.
ELIP is available in two formats: online or in person on campus. The online format allows you to meet the language requirements from anywhere in the world. Join ELIP and take the next step toward a successful academic journey in Canada.
The University's Monthly Webinars
The University of Windsor holds monthly webinars for its official representatives. The next one will take place on October 13, 2026. The webinar will cover the university’s programs and services, admission requirements and procedures, changes to immigration regulations, and scholarships for international students. The Immigrant.Today team participates in these meetings and receives first-hand information about admissions.
