Canada has lowered the passing score for French-speaking candidates in Express Entry
Second major funding round in a row for French-speaking founders.
On July 22, 2026, Canada held a category-based selection in Express Entry for candidates with French language skills. Invitations to apply for permanent residence were issued to 5,000 candidates.
The cut-off score was 399. In the previous draw on July 9, 2026, the threshold was 420, and 5,000 people also received invitations. The minimum score dropped by 21 points, while the number of invitations remained unchanged.
The lower cut-off score of 399 made this new round more accessible to candidates with lower CRS scores. At the same time, Canada issued 5,000 invitations to French-speaking candidates for the second time in a row, confirming the high priority of this category in the Express Entry system.
Throughout 2026, cut-off scores in French language draws have varied noticeably. They ranged from 393 to 420 points. This new result is one of the lowest this year and is close to the spring round figures.
Invited candidates must submit a complete application for permanent residence within 60 days. The package must include language test results, proof of education, work experience documents, and other required materials.

Why French gives you an advantage
Canada continues to attract professionals with French language skills to support the development of Francophone communities outside Quebec. Separate draws for this category are held regularly and often feature a large number of invitations and relatively low cut-off scores.
To qualify for this category, candidates must demonstrate French language proficiency at NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Additionally, they must meet the requirements of one of the federal programs managed through the Express Entry system.
French language skills significantly increase your chances of receiving an invitation. You can join online French classes through this link.
