Canada accelerates granting of permanent residence to 33 thousand workers
Priority will be given to those who have already been living in small and rural communities of the country for two years.
Canadian authorities continue working to optimize the country's immigration system, focusing on supporting regions that particularly need labor resources. This refers to rural and remote areas experiencing a shortage of workers in key economic sectors.
Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Lena Metlege Diab announced a special program for foreign workers already in the country. The initiative was announced as part of the 2025 federal budget and provides for expedited permanent residence status for 33,000 people during 2026-2027.
Who Can Apply for Expedited Processing
The program is aimed at helping those who have already integrated into Canadian society and are actively participating in local economic development. The Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship is prioritizing applications from work permit holders who have previously submitted documents for permanent residence status.
Workers who meet certain requirements can apply for the initiative:
- Application through the Provincial Nominee Program, Atlantic Immigration Program, Rural Community Immigration Pilot programs, caregiver programs, or the Agri-Food Pilot Program
- Living in small Canadian communities for two or more years
Focus on Regions in Need
The established criteria will allow the department to grant permanent residence to professionals working in in-demand sectors in rural areas and communities facing labor shortages. These workers are already making a significant contribution to meeting the needs of small and rural communities.
Information about the implementation of the program for workers in Canada is posted on the department's official website. The data will be updated monthly.
